Saturday Club (Drama & Hip Hop): We run a drama and also a hip hop class for our adults every Saturday in our centre beside the Castletroy Park Hotel. We follow a school calendar for the most part. We need 2 volunteers every Saturday from 12.30 to 3.30pm to help the teachers run the classes. Our hope is that each volunteer commits to one Saturday every month or so for six months where possible. The Drama and hip hop is very popular with our older members, some of whom have been attending for a long time. They love the opportunity to perform and we encourage self-expression and good speech. We would hope that a volunteer would enjoy meeting this friendly crew and their guardians, they are very welcoming. Also if the volunteer enjoys drama & dance Miriam & Baz (teachers) are always delighted to have Extras to step in and help. The volunteers contribution, if they choose to go ahead, will ensure that Club activities stay going (without supervision we would not be able to continue), it will provide our adults with the opportunity to meet new people and learn from them. The volunteers help will also allow a parent, who otherwise would have to supervise themselves, the opportunity of respite and time to themselves. This is no small contribution.
We also are starting a Youth Club teens with Down syndrome over the age of 12 years to approx. 20 years. This group is new and very excited to get started. We hope to meet twice a month to begin with – most likely on a Monday night 8 to 9/9.30pm. We will begin with board games and hope to have programmes that encourage independence such as “how to make a healthy snack”. Later we hope to visit other youth clubs and go on outings such as bowling, cinema etc. We would love volunteers to help run this group. These volunteer roles would suit anyone with an interest in youth work or social work or working with people with intellectual disabilities. It might also suit a sports student as we really hope to encourage physical activity in all its forms. An idea is a Buddy System – a mentor for our teens to go for a walk with and to encourage healthy lifestyle, independence etc.
We are starting a junior Movement /Dance Class for children under 6 years of Age from September 16. This will be run by a former student of UL Dance Academy. It will run either on a Monday at circa 3pm for one hour. A volunteer will be needed to help run the class with the teacher and would ideally suit a student of dance. The Teacher we have is an excellent girl and whoever works with her will have a great friend and mentor.
